Behaviour support
Find out whether implementing-provider rules apply to your service.
Start here
A behaviour support plan is a written plan for one person. It describes behaviour that could cause harm, explains why it happens, and sets out the support that helps: routines, communication, the environment, and how workers should respond.
A specialist behaviour support practitioner writes the plan. Day-to-day workers don't write it. Neither do we.
Some plans include a regulated restrictive practice: something that limits a person's rights or freedom of movement. That brings extra obligations for whoever uses it.
You are implementing if your workers carry out the plan in daily support. For example:
If that sounds like your service, implementing-provider rules may apply to you.
Plain English
If any of these are used in your service, they must be in a behaviour support plan, with a plan to reduce and stop them over time.
Your obligations
Every worker, every shift. If it doesn't work in practice, raise it with the practitioner. Don't change it yourself.
Specific to the plan, not just general training. Keep a record of who was trained, on what, and when.
Rules differ across Australia. Some states and territories need approval before a practice is used.
Providers using a regulated restrictive practice report its use to the Commission every month.
Used without authorisation, or outside a plan? That is a reportable incident, with a deadline.
Rosters, training records, data, incident records, plan versions and reviews.
The terminology
The NDIS Commission calls this Module 2A — Implementing Behaviour Support Plans.
If it applies to you, Module 2A is added to your registration and your audit, on top of the Core Module every provider has.
Now that you know what the words mean, the term is just a label for the list above.
Important
This product covers implementation only
Easy Registration helps providers who implement plans written by someone else. It does not qualify you or your workers to write behaviour support plans.
Developing plans has extra requirements
Providers who write plans do so as specialist behaviour support practitioners, with suitability assessed by the NDIS Commission. That sits outside this product. If that is you, get advice specific to specialist behaviour support first.
We are independent of the NDIS Commission
Easy Compliance is not the Commission, an auditor or a government body. Requirements change and authorisation rules differ by state. Check the current rules and get professional advice where you need it.
Answer a few questions about the supports you deliver. We show the modules that seem to apply and what to do first.
